Digital Archives Meeting

September 3, 2008

Libraries are now faced with the challenges of collecting, processing, preserving and providing access to the papers of political, literary, and other prominent cultural figures and organizations, which increasingly include born-digital as well as analog audio-visual and paper materials.  Although the acquisition of such hybrid archives by research universities is now becoming quite standard, best practices for processing, securing, preserving, and providing access to born-digital materials, have yet to be established.  We are interested in bringing together librarians and archivists to share some of the challenges and prospects involved in dealing with hybrid and born-digital papers.

The goals of this meeting are:

  1.  To learn how institutions are already dealing with the ingest, preservation of and securing access to born-digital archives
  2. To discover the needs and priorities of libraries and archives which are acquiring born-digital archives but do not yet have strategies in place to handle them

  3. To foster discussion and collaboration amongst the staff of major research libraries and archives with respect to standards and best practices for the archiving of born-digital materials
